Computer Operations Manager and Project Manager

Computer Operations Manager and Project Manager works in the operations department in an organisation and is responsible for the production of the data centre. Operations managers plan software, organise personnel, helping them to set and accomplish goals, and control the operation of all data processing equipment and software. 


Computer Operations Manager and Project Managers plan and manage the daily operations of a computer department. They set department policies and procedures and ensure that staff work within those parametres. Computer Operations Manager and Project Manager are responsible for operation of mainframe and information systems equipment and for maintaining and updating equipment. They are also responsible to manages  staff on a day-to-day basis and ensure that departmental goals and objectives are achieved.

Computer Operations Manager and Project Manager interpret management's needs to their staff. Project managers plan and control all the different projects, monitor their progress and ensure that projects are completed within their set target dates.


Personal Requirements

They must have good interpersonal communication skills. Both operations managers and project managers have considerable seniority and experience and may have been through the ranks of a programmer or systems analyst. Various management courses are offered at universities of technology and universities. Operations managers and project managers should be able to make quick decisions.

Schooling & School Subjects

Compulsory Subjects: Mathematics (if you intend studying IT degree at university)
Recommended subjects: Information Technology.
Additional: 

  • If you intend studying a degree or a diploma in IT at university then you need a matric with a Bachelor's pass or a Diploma pass.
  • Meet the admission requirements (APS) set by the university.
  • There are alternative routes into IT which do not require a Bachelor’s or a Diploma pass and which do not require Mathematics.


What to Study

Computer Operations Manager and Project Managers will need a computer and or IT related qualification. To gain entry into a management position early in ones career a related academic degree will be best suited. Computer and IT related careers are quite practical by natuer which means that individuals without high level academic qualifications can still reach senior positions but this is likely to take a little longer as experience is gained.
