Wagon Fitter

A Wagon Fitter is responsible for repairing and maintaining various types of railway wagons. They work in railway yards, workshops or at various railway maintenance facilities. The job requires a high level of technical knowledge, as the fitter must be able to identify faults, diagnose problems and carry out repairs. They may also be required to perform routine inspections and conduct preventive maintenance on the wagons.


Tasks:

  • Inspecting and diagnosing faults in railway wagons.
  • Performing repairs and maintenance on wagons, including welding, grinding, sandblasting, painting and fitting replacement parts.
  • Conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance on wagons.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and railway standards.
  • Operating various tools and equipment required for the job.
  • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.

How to Enter

  • National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in a relevant trade (e.g. Fitter and Turner).
  • Relevant work experience in a similar role.
  • Familiarity with the railway industry and its practices.
