These scholarships are offered in memory of Joel Joffe, who was Nelson Mandela’s lawyer in the 1963/4 Rivonia Trial. He played a crucial role in the struggle for democracy in South Africa. The Trust continues to build on his legacy, inspiring others to do as much as possible to realise human rights and reduce poverty. The minimum requirement for qualification for such a bursary is a BA (Law), B Comm (Law), B Iuris or B Proc degree or a similar qualification or proof of successful completion of the first two years of the revised 4-year LLB curriculum. If you are currently in your 1st semester of your second year, we can assist with a bursary for your 3rd and 4th year of study. OR If you are currently in your 1st semester of your third year, we can assist with a bursary for your final year of study. Preference will be given to applicants in serious financial need, although outstanding academic merit will be taken into consideration. A bursary shall only be applied towards the tuition fees of a recipient. The Fund’s Board of Control will in each case determine the amount of the bursary. A bursary can be awarded for a maximum period of two years at a South African University.

The E.V. Adams Scholarship is awarded each year to students who display exceptional abilities, and whom the firm’s partners consider deserving on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The bursary is open to students enrolled at a South African University who demonstrate consistently strong academic performance. South African Citizens studying towards their BA Law/BCom Law/ LLB degree. First year students must provide their Grade 11 and 12 results, indicating that they have maintained a B symbol or higher in English and a C symbol or higher in Mathematics since Grade 11. Furthermore, they must demonstrate their financial need for support. Tertiary students must have maintained a higher than average academic standard. The bursary programme is provided to students with a view to employment as Candidate Attorneys at the firm.

The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank) provides bursaries to students in relevant fields of study who are from disadvantaged backgrounds. These bursaries are made available annually to needy qualifying Grade 12 pupils to embark on full-time studies. These includes, for example; Economics, Actuarial Sciences, Mathematical Statistics, Information Technology, Finance, Law and Accounting, but also includes for example, Medicine, Dentistry and Social Work. A bursary will be granted from the first academic year and reviewed annually. Bursary holders need not reapply for the bursary each year. The Bank will provide students who are Bank bursary holders, vacation work opportunities that are funded by the Bank.
