The national bursary programme of the Institute dates back to 1935. Since then our students, among them Mr. Nelson Mandela, who won a bursary worth £120 in the late 1940s, have served the country in almost every field of endeavour. Since 1980, we have produced over 3 700 medical, business, management, scientific, education, and engineering graduates. Our bursaries have long been a major contribution to economic empowerment in South Africa – well before the idea became popular.

SPEBS is a bursary scheme administered by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) to assist financially needy and academically deserving students who study towards the National Diploma or the Degree in Civil Engineering at a South African tertiary institution. Bursaries are awarded to National Diploma students after having passed their first level (S1) examination and to degree students after having passed their first year examinations.

Sappi have created a bursary scheme in partnership with accredited universities, so innovative young South Africans are supported throughout their studies in line with real world business needs. Sappi encourage the brightest young talent including, school leavers or university student between 18 and 25 years old who intend on studying (or are studying) full time at any South African accredited university. Sasol Post Graduate Bursaries are awarded for full-time University study in Science and Engineering, at Masters or Ph.D Degree level.

The SASOL University of Technology bursary is awarded to high achieving matrics wanting to attend a University of technology to study in the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, Mine Surveying; Industrial Engineering and Power (Electrical Engineering and Process Instrumentation).

SEIFSA bursaries are awarded to students registered for approved undergraduate Engineering courses at South African universities as well as students studying towards a National Diploma in Engineering at Universities of Technology (UoT). Preference is given to employees of member companies of an Association federated to SEIFSA and their dependants.

Sibanye-Stillwater is an independent, global precious metal mining group, producing a unique mix of metals that includes gold and the platinum group metals (PGMs). Bursaries are provided to high academic achievers in various fields of study. Bursary focus areas change from year to year and are impacted by the South African skills market and the SAB business need. In addition to financial support, our bursars are also afforded the opportunity to learn more about the world of work by participating in the resolution of real business challenges, through structured summer school or vacation work.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is the authority in charge of promoting, regulating and enforcing civil aviation safety and security. The SAGI is a voluntary organization for registered persons working in land surveying, engineering surveying, town planning, photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS) & land management. The SAGI offers various bursaries for students to study at University or Universities of Technology studying towards Professional Land Surveyor or Engineering Surveyor, also diploma or degree is Geospatial Information Science. South Deep Education Trust bursaries are focused on creating educational opportunities for youth in Westonaria, where the company’s South Deep mine is based. All applications should be emailed to, admin@sdeducationtrust.co.za as one attachement. This Grant is open to Historically Disadvantaged Individuals from low-income households in the communities surrounding the South Deep Mine and/or the Labour Sending Areas. The Grant is open to students in their first three years of tertiary study (unless the trustees deem a particular case exceptional and decide in their discretion to award an Educational Grant to a post-graduate student.

A SAB graduate programme is a structured 18-24 month programme which is designed to address the acquisition of technical skills and experience for a graduate as well as familiarise the trainee with the SAB philosophies. The rigour of the programme should ensure that an individual that has completed the programme can be allocated an area of responsibility immediately.

TCTA launched Project Naledi in 2005 with the expressed aim of recruiting, funding and employing youths from previously disadvantaged areas, with particular focus on rural areas. This was contrived as a contribution to the government’s transformation agenda of the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGISA), the Joint Initiative on Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA) and the National Human Resource Strategy. The JIPSA framework broadly identified developing scarce skills in the following high priority areas: Engineering and planning skills for jobs in transport, communications and energy; Engineering projects for cities and towns, to meet the needs of municipalities; Management and planning skills in education, health and municipalities. The project intends to: Identify deserving and capable students from disadvantaged communities; Recruit candidates into engineering, project management, finance and accounting disciplines; Support the candidates throughout their studies by providing academic tutoring and mentoring; Provide specific and on-going support to the students that enter into accounting and engineering fields through regular follow-up sessions; and Develop a model for increasing participation of youth into the scarce skills category.
